From mid-August until mid-September, the Latvian capital of Riga will for the first time host an exhibition by internationally acclaimed photographers Anders Petersén (Sweden) and Jacob Aue Sobol (Denmark). The exhibition called "Veins" will be displayed at the Latvian Academy of Art. Alongside the exhibition the photographers will also hold artist talks, as planned by the organisers – the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia and the Danish Cultural Institute in Latvia.

In July 2013 the Art Academy of Latvia hosts the travelling exhibition “JAPANESE DESIGN TODAY 100”, brought to you thanks to a partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Latvia and the Japan Foundation. The exhibition is a selection of 100 finest examples of Japanese design created between the 1990s and the present, focusing on products used in everyday life. Another 13 objects of modern design are included from the early post-war years, mainly from the fifties, to show the origin of today’s design.

Opening of FASHION MANIFESTATION of Latvia on 19th March (0 komentāri)
Fashion Manifestation, the festival of Latvian fashion, will take place in the Academy of Arts of Latvia (13 Kalpaka Blvd., Riga) on the 19th and 20th of March 2015. The objective of the festival is to demonstrate variety, diversity and availability of the fashion brands of Latvia.  The audience will be given the opportunity to observe the shows and collection presentations for adults and children of twenty leading and new fashion designers.  This event is organised as part of the DESIGN MANIFESTATION cycle, containing expositions and events of the contemporary design expositions of Latvia.

Art Project “World Cities. Live Paintings” in Hong Kong (0 komentāri)
The Art Academy of Latvia (AAL) art project “World Cities. Live Paintings” is carried out in Hong Kong where Aleksejs Naumovs, Rector of AAL, and Kristaps Zariņš, Vice-Rector of the AAL, are painting large scale paintings en plein air from March 1 until 6, 2015. Newly made works will be showcased in an exhibition at the gallery in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) School of Design. The art project is one of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union culture programme events.

The Art Academy of Latvia (AAL) in cooperation with the Embassy of Latvia in Portugal caries out the art project “World Cities. Live Paintings” from February 24 until 27, 2015. During the project Professor Aleksejs Naumovs, the Rector of  the AAL, and Associate Professor Kristians Brekte, the Head of the Department of Environmental Art, will paint large-scale paintings en plein air, which will be showcased in the exhibition. The biennial, which since 1990 runs under the auspices of the International Committee Ars Baltica, brings together participants from nine countries of the Baltic Sea region – Russia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. In 2013, Latvia is represented by three artists: Elīna Alka, Reinis Eglītis (both graduates of the Art Academy of Latvia) and graphic art student Līva Rutmane.

As announced during the opening event of exhibition “Brederlo – von Sengbusch Art Award 2012” on 11 October 2012, the award this year goes to four students of the Art Academy of Latvia – Klāvs Loris (Department of Painting), Kristīne Rozenberga (Department of Graphic Art), Andris Maračkovskis and Elīna Vojevoda (both from the Department of Sculpture). Works by the award winners and their fellow students, who contended for the prize, are all on show in the “Brederlo – von Sengbusch Art Award 2012” exhibition at the Hall of the Art Academy of Latvia until 1 November 2012. Exhibition
The triennial is international with no geographical restrictions. It is open to both professionals and university students. The artist must hold the copyright to his or her own work, and the work may not have been created under an academic supervisor. The exhibition will take place from 23 November 2012 through 3 February 2012 at the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, Tallinn, Estonia.

Annual Charity Fair "Jarmarka" 2011 (0 komentāri)
The annual exhibition-fair-charity event "Jarmarka", which in December 2011 took place at the Art Academy of Latvia already for the ninth time, has been successfully concluded. It is a large-scale event that every December assembles together several hundred students of the Art Academy of Latvia who are exhibiting and offering for sale their study works. The historic venue is bustling with energy, the scent of oil paint pleasantly lingers in the air and the Great Hall of the Academy is filled with thousands of artworks. Both local and foreign visitors are invited to come by to discover new talents, purchase their works or simply browse through and get acquainted with the styles and approaches of the young artists. This year the event featured more than 14'500 study works by 302 Academy's students. Almost 5600 of the works were sold and have found new home either in Latvia or abroad. We're looking forward to December 2012 when "Jarmarka" will be celebrating its 10th anniversary!

“SEB Contest in Painting 2011” Won by Elza Sīle (0 komentāri)
The annual "SEB Contest in Painting - TALENT PAYS OFF" which is organized by SEB Bank and the Art Academy of Latvia this year was won by Ms Elza Sīle, student at the Department of Painting. The winner was announced on 7 December 2011 during the closing ceremony of the exhibition which featured works of all the contestants and was on show at the Art Academy of Latvia from 15 November until 7 December 2011. Ms Elza Sīle, who was awarded the prize for her work "S_p34", receives a stipend of 1200.00 LVL and a chance to participate in an art workshop in one of the member states of the European Union.

The annual student art fair-exhibition-charity event JARMARKA this year celebrates its 10th anniversary! If you are in Riga from 19 until 29 December 2012, do include JARMARKA on your route. Two recent graduates of the Art Academy of Latvia – Neonilla Medvedeva and Ieva Pētersone – participate in the first edition of SVEART – Saint-Vincent European Biennial Art Prize 2012 exhibition, which has brought together 44 artists from 21 countries. SVEART 2012 is a unique opportunity to discover the European art of the new generations and to get to know the participating artists. The works on show will be judged by an international jury that will decide on the biennial’s winner.

From 12 March until 12 April 2012 The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Riga hosts young designer exhibition "React!" that in February was on show at the “Greenhouse” section of the “Stockholm Furniture Fair”. Stockholm Furniture Fair is the largest furniture show in the Nordic region, and the Faculty of Design of the Art Academy of Latvia had the honour to take part in it already for the seventh time. The exhibit “React!” set up by the Academy's students reveal how the young Latvian designers experience belonging to the traditional craftsmanship, how they perceive ethnography and national identity in a contemporary context.

Unique Paper Fashion Exhibition at “Galerija Centrs” (0 komentāri)
Shopping mall “Galerija Centrs” in the Old Town of Riga hosts a unique fashion design exhibition which features garments made of paper by the young fashion designers, students of the Art Academy of Latvia. The exhibition is on show from 8 until 25 March 2012.

The exhibition is the result of a competition that was announced among the Academy’s students in February 2012. The young designers were invited to submit their fashion design ideas to be executed in paper. The eleven best applicants who received a chance to create their designs and participate in the exhibition are: Sabīne Skarule, Andra Andžāne, Anete Krišjānova, Ludmila Kruglika, Simona Veilande, Sanita Simtniece, Evija Berga, Elīna Siliņa, Kristiāna Kalniņa, Zane Prokofjefa and Iveta Vilne.

The International Glass Prize is a triennial glass competition for arts, design and crafts taking place in Belgium. The first edition of the prize is focusing on “The Object”. The second urban design festival "The Way Through the Christmas Trees", which took place in Riga from 2 November 2011 until 15 January 2012, has been successfully concluded! This year the festival featured forty-two different visions of a Christmas tree, some traditional and others very modern and unconventional. Fourteen of the Christmas trees on view were designed by the students of the Art Academy of Latvia under the supervision of the Academy′s professors.

From 16 December 2011 until 16 January 2012 Riga Art Nouveau Museum hosts exhibition "12 Alberta Street" which features Art Nouveau jewellery created by the young artist Edgars Kvjatkovskis. Drawing parallels between cultural heritage and the art of today, the exhibition for the museum is a symbolic beginning of a new direction in its development.

The jewellery exhibited, which in its form is modern and original, has been inspired by the Art Nouveau heritage in Latvia and especially by the diversity of Riga′s Art Nouveau architecture.

Festival NATURE/ URBAN/ FUTURE invites to a contemporary art exhibition "Edible, Inedible" that will be on show from 12 December 2011 through 4 January 2012 at an extraordinary venue - empty cellar space at 13 Pils Street, Sigulda (entrance from the inner courtyard). Exhibition opening took place on 11 December 2011 at 6 PM.

The unusual location of the exhibition - a space that usually is used for commercial purposes - has been chosen deliberately. Standing besides grocery stores and cafes, the empty cellar space becomes another "tasty" destination conveniently accessible to both locals and tourists.

International exhibition "Contemporary Art, Technology and Paranormal" is the final event based on the KUNO intensive course that took place at Häädemeeste Cosmonautic centre (Estonia) in August 2011. KUNO is a network of Nordic-Baltic fine art academies, aiming to become an art university without walls. Joining in with others, also representatives of the Art Academy of Latvia were among those who participated in its intensive summer course. In addition to the exhibition opening on 11 November 2011 at 7 PM, the organisers of the event invite everyone to attend the presentation of the project‘s catalogue, art performance and other arts and music events all of which are going to be part of the evening‘s programme.

SEB Contest in Painting – TALENT PAYS OFF! (0 komentāri)
The submission of artworks for the annual "SEB Contest in Painting - TALENT PAYS OFF!" organized by SEB Bank and Art Academy of Latvia has been completed. This year the contest, which was open to all students of the Art Academy of Latvia, attracted 71 participants who in total submitted 118 paintings. All the artworks will be on view in the exhibition "SEB Contest in Painting" at the Hall of Art Academy of Latvia from 15 November until 7 December. The winner of the competition will be announced on the final eve of the exhibition - 7 December at 6 PM. The prizewinner will be awarded with a stipend of 1200.00 LVL and will receive a chance to participate in an art workshop in one of the member states of the European Union.

International design workshop “Make Design! Dutch Design Made in Latvia” has been successfully concluded. Its final event – pop-up exhibition “Make” which on 12 November 2011 was exhibited at Art Museum Riga Bourse – has travelled on to the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, Riga, where it is on show from 16 until 27 November 2011. The exhibition features works made during the creative workshop by students of the Art Academy of Latvia and Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The focus of the workshop was to create new handmade designs using traditional techniques.

On the 22 February 2011 the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia decided to significantly cut funding for higher education. The envisioned budget cut for the Ministry of Education was 600 000 LVL and for the Ministry of Culture - 400 000 LVL.
