Annual Charity Fair "Jarmarka" 2011
The annual exhibition-fair-charity event "Jarmarka", which in December 2011 took place at the Art Academy of Latvia already for the ninth time, has been successfully concluded. It is a large-scale event that every December assembles together several hundred students of the Art Academy of Latvia who are exhibiting and offering for sale their study works. The historic venue is bustling with energy, the scent of oil paint pleasantly lingers in the air and the Great Hall of the Academy is filled with thousands of artworks. Both local and foreign visitors are invited to come by to discover new talents, purchase their works or simply browse through and get acquainted with the styles and approaches of the young artists. This year the event featured more than 14'500 study works by 302 Academy's students. Almost 5600 of the works were sold and have found new home either in Latvia or abroad. We're looking forward to December 2012 when "Jarmarka" will be celebrating its 10th anniversary!

Rector of the Art Academy of Latvia, Professor Aleksejs Naumovs: "It is my great satisfaction that ‘Jarmarka′ has entered its ninth year. As an immensely positive force it on the one hand provides all the students with an opportunity to show their works publicly and on the other hand gives the visitors a unique chance to see the results of the study process and purchase artworks which are closest to heart. If during the past years a portion of the fair′s income was invested in restoring the premises of the Art Academy of Latvia, then this year the unsteady weather has caused a change in our planned good deeds. During the autumn storms, our ‘part-time student′ Northern wind has damaged the roof of the Academy and the repair works require a lot of financial resources. It is during these times when we are facing unforeseen challenges the charity budget of ‘Jarmarka′ will come as a small but significant contribution to the repair expenses. I wish ‘Jarmarka′ the best possible weather forecast, an everlasting lifespan and a safe roof above head each and every year!"

"It′s already possible to say that ‘Jarmarka′ takes place regularly - once every year. And it is a great pleasure of mine to see that it has become an integral part of the annual cultural agenda. Our team is always preparing for the event with true joy and enthusiasm. It is a special atmosphere when we literally dive into an ocean of artworks and spend there two entire weeks. Life is not imaginable without the presence of art, and these young artists are the ones who in the future will fill our interiors with useful and beautiful things, will shape our taste and, hopefully, will become famous. For the students it is a good opportunity to meet the audience and receive feedback for their work. It motivates for further success and allows one to evaluate current progress. In my opinion it is important for development and growth," tells Gundega Turnele, the organizer of "Jarmarka" and Director of event agency "Pareizā ķīmija".

Every year part of the income of "Jarmarka" is dedicated to the restoration of certain premises at the Art Academy of Latvia. Over the past year students of the Department of Restoration in close collaboration with their professors have worked on the restoration of the Academy′s South-western staircase, its adjacent room and the vestibule of the main building. It has allowed at least part of the Academy′s beautiful premises to regain their original splendour. As Rector of the Academy Aleksejs Naumovs has already mentioned, taking into account the damage done to the roof of the Academy during the autumn storms, this year the charity budget of "Jarmarka" will be used to partially cover the costs of repair works.
