| Mini-Exhibition Series “Intimate Space” Presents: Krista Dzudzilo‘s “Private” and Zane Tuča’s “Idea of an Exhibition” During spring 2012, the Art Academy of Latvia presents mini-exhibition series “Intimate Space” - a project encompassing several small-scale exhibitions featuring artworks by 3rd year students of the Department of Painting. From 12 until 16 March 2012 the series presents two exhibitions: Krista Dzudzilo’s “Private” and Zane Tuča’s “Idea of an Exhibition”. |
| | The young artist Krista Dzudzilo in her exhibition “Private” puts space in it’s most immediate sense at the very centre of her show – space as a private territory, a living-space, which is intimate to the author but at the same time recognizable by anyone. “Private space where we reside and lead our lives is created by us within the boundaries we ourselves have built. I depict my own space as fragmented and broken. I am interested in the nature of perception and the peculiarities of looking. As when we enter a new place for the first time and move forward, the vantage point shifts and reveals the place from different angles. Memory shapes a particular image of the place which is a combination of all the information we’ve perceived. Each of the rooms is depicted as static, but with a slight diversion, as if it was a stuck vinyl record. Some objects, which attract attention, change position as we move. For me it was important to give a particular, recognizable image of the object, but to modify it slightly, so that it raises new questions,” Krista Dzudzilo explains how aspects of perception define the exhibition.
In the meanwhile, Zane Tuča participates in the exhibition series with an installation entitled “Idea of an Exhibition” – an attempt to create an association about an exhibition rather than an exhibition in its traditional sense. “Idea: Something, such as a thought or conception, that potentially or actually exists in the mind as a product of mental activity.“* In her installation the artist presents the idea of an exhibition from a slightly ironic standpoint commenting upon the relationship of an artwork with the consumer society. The exhibit consists of simple elements with a quite mysterious, world-famous and experienced being at the centre of attention.
Mini-exhibition series “Intimate Space” has already featured several student exhibitions – Madara Neikena’s “s-pace”, Patriks Zvaigzne’s “s007m”, Dārta Šķēle’s “The Way”, Laima Steika’s “Neighbours” and Dagne Ventiņa’s “Moment” – which will be followed by others. Each of the exhibitions is reviewed by the students of the Department of History and Theory of Arts, thus producing a feed-back to each author and contributing to the dialogue between the young artists and art historians. Complete information (in Latvian) about the past exhibitions and reviews can be found here (click here).
The idea of “Intimate Space” first originated during the conceptual study course with the objective to provide the young artists with an opportunity to display their works – something that is relevant to them either in form, content or sensations – in a communicative space. Within the theme “intimate space” students were able to choose freely the topic and setting of the exhibition, but at the same time their shows faced certain restrictions – such as the limited exhibition space (built from 2 to 4 exhibition walls) and time (each exhibition is running just for one week).
During the study process student exhibitions have already gone through the first phase of assessment under the supervision of lecturer and artist Andris Eglītis. With the opening of mini-exhibition series “Intimate Space” student work in a way steps into broad daylight and becomes visible also to colleagues and general local and international audience. During the spring term, the series will feature artworks by approximately 15 students.
If one looks back at the Academy’s exhibition programme, the mini-exhibition series has predecessors, such as exhibition “Gallery of Feelings” (“Sajūtu galerija”) in 2006, which featured works also by students of other specialties, and exhibition “My Space” (“Mana telpa”), which showcased artworks by the students of conceptual painting workshop (in 2009) and 3rd year students of the Department of Painting (in 2011). In addition to that, many student-initiated exhibition have taken place at the Hall of the Academy, such as “Soup 1” (“Zupa 1”) and “Soup 2” (“Zupa 2”).
Exhibition series “Intimate Space” was made possible by the lecturer Andris Eglītis, Head of the Faculty of Visual Art Professor Ivars Heinrihsons (author of the idea) and the Project Co-Ordinator and Academy’s student Laimdota Steķe.
