Friedrich Wilhelm Brederlo (born in Jelgava on 7 December 1779 and died in Riga on 2 March 1862), whose name the award bears, was one of the great art experts and collectors of his time. The collection includes more than 200 paintings, majority of which are currently housed at the recently renovated art museum “Riga Bourse” (6 Dome Square, Riga). On 31 October 1906 the collector’s great-grandson Oskar Wilhelm von Sengbusch handed over the collection as a loan to the Riga City Art Museum (now Latvian National Museum of Art).

A hundred years after this remarkable event, the heirs of the collection, to honour the memory of Friedrich Wilhelm Brederlo, decided to revive the tradition of supporting Latvian artists. Thus, von Sengbusch family established the “Brederlo – von Sengbusch Art Award” to support the brightest young talents from Latvia. The Award is presented bi-annually since 2006. In 2010, the award was won by Zane Balode, Edgars Ošs, Sandis Aispurs and Sabīne Vekmane.
