Launch of the information design exposition INFORMATION
The official launch of the exposition INFORMATION, dedicated to various aspects of products, services and processes of the graphic design of Latvia, will take place on Thursday 5 March 2015 at the Academy of Arts of Latvia (13 Kalpaka Blvd, Riga). This is the third exhibition of the DESIGN MANIFESTATION, exposition cycle of the design of Latvia.
The role of information in modern society is growing. Therefore also the information design is an area associated with high expectations of the potential and extensive changes. Tactile-emotional contact provided by a good book, magazine or other printed material of good quality is still topical and demanded. Also the offer of products and services is unthinkable without advertising or good quality packaging. Alongside the traditional media there is a growing demand for the new information formats – functional and interactive digital solutions. The exhibition INFORMATION invites to explore this diversity, become aware of information design as an essential aspect in every sector.
Exposition INFORMATION is dedicated to various aspects of information design, like packaging design and the information contained on it, identities, graphic arts, design of publications, navigation design, info-graphics; e-services; interactive and digital solutions – in the web Sites, platforms, environmental objects, brand campaign etc. The set of the works exhibited here is only a small fraction of the outstanding works created by Latvian designers united by quality, responsibility, respect, curiosity and passion for graphic design.
A white A4-size sheet is a starting point for any graphic designer’s work. Thus, the code for the exposition INFORMATION is a white A4 –size sheet, with the objects arranged on 45 times multiplied A4 sheets, exhibiting 11 graphic design expressions in different areas. The exposition surfaces are positioned on a grid network, also an important element of the graphic design. Texts are presented black on white as the most laconic means of information presentation.
The exposition is set in two activity areas- the active zone and the reading zone. The active zone will include presentations of different aspects of the graphic design, digital tools and interactive solutions. The reading zone will provide an insight in the printed (and electronic) media that have contained information and continue to inform about different design aspects and events in the economic and cultural sectors of Latvia in this century.
To facilitate a better understanding about the creation process of the information design and its benefits, within the framework of the exhibition there will be design excursions and design narratives organised on three Tuesdays in March at 5 PM with participation of the graphic designers Miķelis Baštiks, Ēriks Šulcs un Sandijs Ruļuks.
In order to make a record of the current design of products and services created in Latvia and to visualize the future development of the design of Latvia, visitors of the exhibition INFORMATION, similarly to other DESIGN MANIFESTATION exposition venues, will be invited to participate in the creation of the design manifest. The closing discussion „Rights to Design!” will take place from 2 to 5 PM on Tuesday 31 March, at the venue of the exposition INFORMATION. Within the framework of this discussion, there is an expectation to create the basis of the design manifest of Latvia.
The group of authors of the design exhibition cycle DESIGN MANIFESTATION is an interdisciplinary team, awarded to draft and implement the exhibition projects in cooperation with the design studio H2E within the framework of the competition organised by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia. The exposition cycle is financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia.
